4Quarters Weekly College Pick’em: Jerry and Mike Go Bowling! (Dec. 28 Bowls)

Yesterday we both were 2-1 in which we both whiffed on UCLA in the Holiday Bowl. Today we’ve got contrast in which I like Louisiana-Monroe and he like Ohio. We both agree on Rutgers taking the Russell Athletic and Texas Tech big in Houston.

Again, instead of giving you each bowl game all at once we’ll give you are picks in a daily dose of them.

Friday – December 28, 2012
AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl (Shreveport, Louisiana): Ohio Bobcats (8-4, 4-4 MAC) v. Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt), 1 pm/ESPN
M – This isn’t anything against Frank Solich or Ohio in what I’m about to say. But Louisiana-Monroe has tangled with the big boys and has a SEC victory (you could say the win against Arkansas at a “neutral” site fueled the free fall). They can score, just look at the point totals produced (not just against so-so defenses like Auburn and Baylor) this season against everyone. Kolton Browning has been a handful for everyone and will be for the Bobcats as well. The Pick: Louisiana-Monroe 38 Ohio 24
J – Another good battle of mid-majors in Shreveport. Louisiana-Monroe sparked Arkansas’ collapse had Auburn dead to rights before kicking did them in and traded punches with Baylor while Ohio went into a hostile environment in Happy Valley and beat Penn State going away in the season opener. This game comes down to whether the Warhawks can slow down the Bobcats duel-threat QB Tyler Tettleton and RB Beau Blakenship, one of the nation’s best backs. Todd Berry’s got a game squad but I’ve got a soft spot for Ohio, so … The Pick: Ohio 33 Louisiana-Monroe 29

Russell Athletic Bowl (Orlando, Florida): Rutgers Scarlett Knights (9-3, 5-2 Big East) v. Virginia Tech Hokies (6-6, 4-4 ACC), 4:30 pm/ESPN
M – I know give Frank Beamer time and he’ll come up with a game plan to beat you. While you’re probably right and this is an opponent that VA Tech could exploit but this isn’t a classic Hokie team as shown by the results. I don’t like this Rutgers team but I do like them more than who they’re playing. The Pick: Rutgers 20 Virginia Tech 13
J – The Scarlet Knights went 9-3 and won a share of the Big East in the first season after Greg Schiano (cut to Bucs fans banging their heads on the desk) and this game appears to be theirs for the taking against a Virginia Tech team that outside of a win against Duke and a hard-fought loss to Florida State has look largely uninspired this season. Expect Rutgers bowl-game winning streak to extend to 6. The Pick: Rutgers 27 Virginia Tech 14

Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas (Houston, Texas): Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-6, 2-6 B1G) v. Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-5, 4-5 Big XII), 8 pm/ESPN
M – Minnesota is a team I’ve seen in person the past two seasons and like where Jerry Kill has the program heading. I don’t like this match-up for the Golden Gophers who have a decent pass defense but haven’t seen an offense like Texas Tech. Also the Red Raiders are playing in their home state and will have enough to make it feel like an away game for Goldie unless I’m overlooking the “snowbird” factor. The Pick: Texas Tech 45 Minnesota 20
J – There should be concerns for the Red Raiders coming into this game with an interim coach and an extremely leaky defense but their quick-strike offense should carry them quite easily against a Golden Gopher team that struggled almost all year to score. The Pick: Texas Tech 38 Minnesota 10

Rankings are from BcS Standings

Current Bowl Record: Mike (5-6), Jerry (6-5)
Regular Season Total: Jerry (92-49), Mike (92-49)
