Bracketbuster X and how 4Quarters would fix it

Here are the games that I’d have if I could choose the match-ups

Yesterday I promised that today I’d put up if I had free reign of the ESPN created Bracketbuster event, its ten years old and lets face it its out of control. 148 teams or so are involved and hell look at the Missouri Valley Conference which is the best midmajor this year conference this year and drew the short straw. Heck you don’t even have Gonzaga who is the king of the midmajor (despite their lack of Final Fours) in this even but other West Coast Conference teams are. It’s time to make this what it should be and select a handful of teams that aren’t in the ACC, Big East, BigXII, B1G, Pac12 and ACC take the weekend before conference play starts and have them play schools from the MVC, Mountain West, Colonial and Atlantic10 plus any other teams that are worth a damn that season. This event is made to help teams that need the RPI boost which it simply doesn’t anymore. Again if I had my choice this year here are the match-ups I’d select.

First Quarter: Ranked Mid-Majors versus the College Basketball Elites (sites: Chicago/Denver/Kansas City/Memphis)

NOTE: I’ll select a neutral site for these games to be played at since they’d never play at the smaller schools

1) #1 Kentucky Wildcats (21-1/SEC) vs #9 Murray State Racers (21-0/OVC) – FedEx Forum (Memphis, TN), Memphis seems neutral for this game

2) #2 Syracuse Orange (22-1/BE) vs #13 UNLV Running Rebels (20-3/MWC) – United Center (Chicago, IL), I thought hey why not meet in the middle instead of playing at the NYC Carrier Dome which all non-conf games for the ‘Cuse are

3) #3 Ohio State Buckeyes (19-3/B1G) vs #16 Saint Mary’s Gaels (21-2/WCC) – Pepsi Center (Denver, CO), Again another site that is in the middle pretty much plus easy to reach

4) #4 Missouri Tigers (19-2/BigXII) vs #12 Creighton Bluejays (20-2/MVC) – Sprint Center (Kansas City, MO), Sure its in Missouri’s home state but its practically in the middle plus the ‘Jays travel well and it be a easy trip south on I-29

Second Quarter: Next tier of Midmajors and top25 teams (These games will be played at same sites listed in 1st Quarter)

1) #5 Duke Blue Devils (18-3/ACC) vs #17 San Diego State Aztecs (18-3/MWC) – United Center (Chicago, IL), This game would be fun to watch or at least to me it would be

2) #6 Baylor Bears (19-2/BigXII) vs #23 Harvard Crimson (19-2/Ivy) – FedEx Forum (Memphis, TN),  This game would be interesting I think with Baylor taking on Harvard also alot of nerds hah

3) #6 North Carolina Tar Heels (18-3/ACC) vs Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-3/WCC) – Pepsi Center (Denver, CO), This would be the other Denver site game and UNC would travel to meet the ‘Zags in the mile high city

4) #8 Kansas Jayhawks (17-4/BigXII) vs Wichita State Shockers (18-4/MVC) – Sprint Center (Kansas City, MO), I don’t care if this would be a home game for KU its a game I want to see and that the Jayhawks would never schedule

Third Quarter: Midmajors versus potential bubble teams (games played at midmajors)

1) Connecticut Huskies (14-6/BE) @ Nevada Wolfpack (18-3) – This game would be played in Reno and would be used for a resume builder for both teams, I’d love to see it.

2) Minnesota Golden Gophers (16-6/B1G) @ Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (20-3/SunBelt) – The Blue Raiders get a B1G bubble team to visit which would be one of the biggest games in their gyms

3) Kansas State Wildcats (15-5/BigXII) @ Oral Roberts (20-4/Summit) – Manhatten, Kansas to Tulsa, Oklahoma wouldn’t be a terrible drive and if the Golden Eagles wanted to they could move this game to the BOK if they didn’t want it on-campus

4) California Bears (17-5/Pac12) @ Long Beach State 49ers (16-6) – Here is your west coast game and I could have choosen any Pac12 team and put them against the Beach who should get to play a power team at home

Fourth Quarter: The rest in my opinion (games played at team with better record)

1) Weber State Wildcats (16-4/BigSky) @ Southern Miss Golden Eagles (19-3/CUSA) – Weber State has the leading scorer in the country and Southern Miss is a under the radar team

2) Iona Gaels (17-5/MAAC) @ Cleveland State Vikings (18-4/Horizon) – I think this would be another fun match-up if it were to happen

3) Davidson Wildcats (15-5/Southern) @ Bucknell Bison (17-6/Patriot) – Two teams that have made life hell for midmajors match-up at Bucknell

4) BYU Cougars (18-6/WCC) @ George Mason Patriots (18-5/CAA) – How about this tilt? Ok, maybe I’m the only excited about this game but I think you enjoy it.

Alright so those are 16 games that I’d make if I were in charge and if you noticed no A10 teams which sorry under this format I just ran out of teams/space they’d been in the next flight. Next time I’ll do a MVC/WCC/A10/CAA match-up with the top teams in the four best non-power six conferences

Bracketbuster games (none-TV) and those selected for TV the weekend of Feb. 17-19

Bonus: Today’s Scoreboard Tonight’s NBA games and Shamus won the 25th annual Royal Rumble in St. Louis on Sunday

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

I’ve decided to bring back another Sunday edition of this blog with it being a lite week and will probably do so next week also FYI (Feb. 5, 2012)

#14 Creighton staged a "Pink Out" with a record crowd with their win against Bradley on Saturday night

First Quarter: NHL All-Star Game 3 pm Ottawa: Team Chara versus Team Alfredsson on NBC Sports Network

Ottawa's Scotiabank Place hosts the 2012 Tim Horton NHL All-Star Game today

Last night the skills competition took place and here are the results of how it turned out  and Patrick Kane stole the show. Good news for the fans of the Columbus Blue Jackets or something to look forward to in 2013. Here are the all-time results from the NHL All-Star Game for your view pleasure.

Second Quarter: NFL Pro Bowl 6 pm from Honolulu: AFC versus NFC on NBC

Tonight the stars of the AFC and NFC meet in a game that might as well be two hand touch with how little defense will be played. I’m talking about the Pro Bowl which is being played at Aloha Stadium (being played before the Super Bowl means no Giants or Patriots).  Here is a history of the NFL All-Star game for you to check out.

Pretty relaxed atmosphere for those in Hawai'i for the Pro Bowl

Third Quarter: Women’s College Basketball

Much was made about Iowa State knocking off #5 Kansas in Ames yesterday but I wasn’t in all honesty. Colorado State beating #12 San Diego State at home also shouldn’t shock anyone but good win for the Rams. Today UConn lost at home to Notre Dame while #3 Ohio State wins again at home versus #20 Michigan

Hilton Magic once again a big reason why I wan't shocked that Kansas lost in Ames

Fourth Quarter: Women’s College Basketball

Here is the Sunday scoreboard for women’s hoops, I freely admit that I watch this sport even with the ridicule I’ll probably now receive for sharing this information.

Lindsey Moore and nationall ranked Nebraska got a road win at Illinois on Sunday afternoon

Fifth Quarter: WWE Royal Rumble

Yes, I’m including the 25th annual WWE Royal Rumble and here are the winners of the previous 24, tonight’s Rumble takes place in St. Louis. My pick for tonight is that Randy Orton returns and wins, yes this may kill readership with this fifth quarter.

Tonight the 25th WWE Royal Rumble takes place in St. Louis

Second Quarter: NFL

Also on Sunday the NFL Pro Bowl will be played between the AFC and NFC (minus the Patriots and Giants who were selected) that game takes place on NBC at 6 pm.
